Best practices for innovators

Using the Productable software to accelerate your innovation, faster
Innovation Roadmap and Decision Criteria

The Productable system is set up to equip innovators with the tools, visibility and a clear roadmap to success.

How do I use Productable to advance my innovation?

Productable gives leadership the ability to set different Stages of innovation maturity and to communicate what data and information they need to resource your innovation with further attention, funding, and assistance.

At each Stage of innovation maturity, leadership requests different data and information. If innovators provide sufficient data and information, they can advance to the next Stage in Productable! The data necessary is laid out in what are called “Decision Criteria”.

What are Decision Criteria?

Criteria set by leaders and decision makers at each stage, requiring necessary data, evidence, and research from an innovator that demonstrates progress and maturity of the innovation. There are typically 3-4 Decision Criteria per stage.

Each Decision Criteria asks one or more questions about how your innovation has met the criteria. Your #1 goal in Productable is to gather data and evidence to confidently answer the questions for each Decision Criteria. You must include an answer to each Decision Criteria to submit a Stage Change Request.

What if I don’t know how to provide or find the “necessary supporting evidence” to successfully meet a Decision Criteria? Or if I don’t understand what the Decision Criteria questions are asking?
  1. Report a Barrier in the platform indicating where you’re stuck; you can tag anyone in the system who may be able to help
  2. You can write a comment in the Decision Criteria itself and tag someone who may be able to help
  3. You can email support@beproductable.com to set-up a working session with an innovation expert
  4. Coming Soon: In-app exercises and tools that help innovators get unstuck. These are called Blueprints.

I have multiple members on my team; this probably means we can’t all change the Decision Criteria answers, right?

Multiple team members can contribute. The most recent answer will appear, however, regardless of who posted it. Previous work will not be lost as team members can view historical updates to the Decision Criteria by clicking on the 🕓 along the right side.

Can I look ahead to future stages’ Decision Criteria and work on them?

You are able to look at the upcoming criteria in future stages, but you are not yet able to add answers. It is necessary to meet all Decision Criteria in your current stage before working ahead.

Submitting Stage Change Requests

Once your team has confidently answered all of the questions for each Decision Criteria, you can request to advance to the next stage. This signifies that your innovation is ready for the next step, which typically comes with additional resourcing and support (potentially includes funding). You can find the Stage Change Request button under the “Stage report” tab on the innovation page.

Who can submit a Stage Change Request?

Any Innovation Member or Innovation Collaborator who is assigned to the innovation.

What will happen after I submit a Stage Change Request?

Your request will be reviewed by leadership, will be visible on your innovation page as Pending, and once a decision has been determined, you will be notified that the request has been:

  • Approved - Your innovation will advance to the next Stage and you can begin working to meet the next set of Decision Criteria.
  • Needs More Information - Particular data or information is missing. You will see the feedback on your project page.

Reporting Barriers and celebrating Wins

What is a Win?

Any sort of progress that feels good and is a step in the right direction. Your Wins congregate on your innovation page and are visible to all of the other innovators and project managers in your organization. We are celebrating your milestones with you!

What is a Barrier?

Something that slows your progress and gets in your way of achieving an objective. You can report barriers under the “Barriers and wins” tab of your innovation page so leadership has visibility into the problem. When posting a Barrier, designate a theme (finance, IT, policy etc), and indicate how debilitating the Barrier is to your team’s progress.

You can tag any other user in the organization for a specific ask/comment. All Barriers will be visible at the portfolio level so leadership has a holistic view of everything slowing down innovation progress.
